About
Alexa Valles is a composer, cellist, and music theorist. She graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio with a Bachelor of Music degree, specializing in music composition.
Alexa is a dedicated performer and has had the opportunity to perform with various groups such as the UTSA orchestra, The public theater of San Antonio, and overseas at the Upbeat/Uzmah International Summer Music School.
As a composer, her compositions often take inspiration from various Hispanic genres to reflect her pride in coming from a multi-cultural background. She has studied under Dr. Ethan Wickman, Dr. Andrew Lloyd, James Syler and was the mentee of composer Aaron Gomez.
During her junior year of high school, Alexa took her first music theory class with band director Gregory Mills. This is where she found her passion for writing, analyzing music and even teaching. Since then, Alexa has had the opportunity to start her own cello studio, intern with UTSA’s string project, teach music theory with nonprofit Conjunto Heritage Taller, teach with LJE Music Lessons Studio, and present her research at various conferences
In 2022, Alexa Valles presented her first research project as the president of the UTSA music theory club at the Texas Society of Music Theory conference. In 2024, with the same group, Alexa won honorable mention for best poster with her group research project "Harmony, Texture, and Timbre in Popular Culture: Undergraduate Edition".
